What are the 24 Martial Arts?
24 Martial Arts mean those recorded on the Martial Arts Training Textbook as compiled
by Lee Deok-mu and Park Je-ga, realists who received orders from King
Jeongjo, and Baek Dong-su, a master of martial arts in 1790. The Martial Arts Training
Textbook was made by accepting both the martial arts from Joseon Dynasty and
the excellent martial arts from China and Japan. As practiced by the soldiers of Jang
Yong Yeong, the picked force of the then Joseon Dynasty stationed in Hwaseong,
they have high historic, artistic and athletic value as immaterial cultural properties.

What is Jang Yong Yeong?
This is the Royal Guards of King Jeongjo, 22nd king of Joseon Dynasty established
to strengthen his kingship. That royal guard was upgraded in 1785 C.E. to Hunryeon
Dogam(Training Guard), the central military camp composed of 12,000 soldiers who
were selected elite soldiers, becoming the largest military camp then. King Jeongjo
transferred his father, Sadoseja’s tomb to Hwasan, Suwon in 1789 and named it
‘Hyeonryungwon’, deployed soldiers of Jang Yong Yeong in Suwon to safeguard the
tomb. He changed the name, Suwonbu, to Hwaseong in 1793, established an
attached camp to Jang Yong Yeong in Hwaseong and built it up to a military city.
