The Best of detached Palace Architecture in Joseon Dynasty
Hwaseong Haenggung

Established at the eastern edge of Mt. Paldalsan, this temporary palace had been used both as Suwon government office and temporary palace after it was built in a new town of Suwon in 1789(13th year of King Jeongjo) and was finally completed by expanding the Hwaseong Haenggung during the construction period of Hwaseong between 1794(18th year of King Jeongjo) and 1796(20th year of King Jeongjo).
King Jeongjo was devoted to his parents such that he worshiped at Hyeonryungwon(current Yungneung), the tomb of his father Crown Prince Jangheon(Crown Prince Sado) 13 times and he had stayed in Hwaseong Haenggung for the worship period. At the time of construction, it formed a typical palace, which consisted of 600 compartments including Bongsudang,
Boknaedang, Yuyeotaek, Sinpungnu, Nambukgunyeong, Uhwagwan and
Deukjungjeong. It was the largest and most beautiful one among our temporary
palaces. Also, the feast for Princess Hong of Hyegyeonggung , King Jeongjo's mother, was held here. Most facilities except Naknamheon disappeared
due to the policy for liquidation of our culture and history under Japanese
imperialism. However, after the residents who were highly spirited to
restore them constructed the Restoration Promotion Committee and developed
continuous and positive restoration campaigns in late 1980s, the restoration
construction was started in 1996 and the first-step restoration of the
Hwaseong Haenggung was completed, and finally it was opened to general
people in Oct. 2003.
