Yongjusa Temple

YongjusaYongjusa Temple was originally named as Galyangsa Temple, which was constructed in the 16th year (A.D.854) of King Munseong of Silla Kingdom and a pure and noted Buddhist seminary. The temple became a ruined temple after being destroyed by fire during Byeongjahoran, Chinese (the ching Dynasty) invasion of Korea in 1636, and then the 22nd King of Joseon Dynasty, King Jeongjo decided to restore the temple while moving his father, the Crown Prince Sado-Seja’s royal tomb to Mt. Hwasan.
King Jeongjo had a hard time due to the idea as if the soul of Sado-Seja who died of being confined in a rice chest by his father, King Yeongjo, would wander the nine celestial bodies, and just at the time King Jeongjo heard the Buddhist sermon ‘Bumoeunjunggyeong’( parents’favors are so much) from a Buddhist priest Bogyeong. He was so impressed by the sermon that he decided to build a big temple to comfort his father’s soul. He moved his father’s tomb to Mt. Hwasan which was known as the best place, and then named it Hyeonreungwon (it was promoted to Yungneung later). He constructed a temple to protect the royal mausoleum of Sado-Seja who died an unnatural death and to pray for the repose of his father’s soul. Since the Buddhism was being suppressed politically and socially in the Joseon Period, such a construction of national consideration has a great historical significance. Jeongjo had a dream that a dragon went up to the sky with cintamani(a magic stone that bestows omnipotence on him who acquires it) in the mouth at night of the completion day, by which it has been called Yongjusa Temple. Therefore, Yongjusa Temple became the temple of filial piety.
