Yungneung·Geolleung
Yungneung-Geolleung is the name called by putting Yungneung, where the Crown Prince Jangheon (also known as Sado-Seja, or Jangjo) and his crown princess Hyegyeong-gung Hong were buried, and Geolleung, where the Crown Prince Jangheon’s son King Jeongjo and His queen Kim were buried, together. The 22th King of the Joseon Dynasty, Jeongjo the Great was recorded in history as the filial piety to his parents was more particular than those of other Kings. He observed that his father met with a tragic death when he was young at eleven years old, and the bitter feeling then was sublimated in extreme filial piety. As soon as he acceded to the throne, he moved his father’s tomb to present place and promoted it to Hyeollyungwon, putting his heart and soul to comfort his deceased father’s deplorable spirit. The neighboring people who admired him for his filial piety took care of the royal tomb particularly.
Yungneung-Geolleung have preserved a dense forest and grass until now owing to such a warm story. Jeongjo had placed his royal mausoleum by his father’s tomb at the foot of Mt. Hwasan, Annyeongri, Taean-eup, Hwaseong-gun, the present place, after he died.
Yungneung is situated at the foot on the southwest of Mt. Hwasan and Geolleung is situated at the foot on the northwest of Mt. Hwasan.
Yungneung-Geolleung is surrounded by a dense forest as deep as to cover the sky with woody pine trees and oak trees that have specially managed since the King Jeongjo Period. Fresh oxygen which trees beginning the sap raising in season emit is indefinably clear and cool, various wild flowers including royal azalea blossomed on a walk in May makes a wonderful green path throughout the year in harmony with fresh verdure. Yungneung-Geolleung is the most suitable place for going out of filial piety education in May, the family’s month, taking a walk in a path through a forest together with family and friends.
